Rachel Hughes
I am a psychologist (BSc; MSc) and psychotherapeutic counsellor (DPC; MBACP) with over 22 years of experience in supporting children, adolescents and adults with mental health and emotional wellbeing needs. I have worked within schools, CAMHS and Local Authority Services.
I am an integrative therapist and my practice is rooted in person centred humanistic psychology; however I draw significantly upon Transactional Analysis, Neuroscience and Attachment Theory. I tailor my therapeutic approach to accommodate the needs of each individual client. I draw upon cognitive behavioural approaches, schema work and somatic bodywork. I also use a combination of guided imagery, gestalt techniques and a range of creative approaches.
I'm a BACP registered counsellor and HCPC registered psychologist

Work I Offer

When working with adults I offer a combination of talking therapy, psychoeducation and creative intervention. I integrate knowledge and techniques from psychodynamic theory, attachment theory, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), schema therapy and experiential therapies.
EMDR can help a person process historic traumas and/or painful memories that are causing emotional distress in the here-and-now. The belief is that the memories of specific events/traumas can be stored in our nervous system and get retriggered in the here and now.
Child therapy involves play, art, clay-field, sandtray and other creative approaches. I view play as the natural means through which children express, communicate and make sense of big, difficult and confusing feelings.
I offer an empathic, non-judgmental approach and provide a safe confidential space where you can reflect on your thoughts, feelings and experiences to gain new insights. Together we will explore how the past is impacting on the present, be curious about long held belief systems, and behavioural - relational patterns.
People come to me for help a wide range of issues. Here are a few of the more common difficulties that can be supported through therapy:
Feelings of stress or anxiety
Panic attacks
Relationship problems
Grief, loss or bereavement
Problems with addiction
Trauma and post-traumatic stress
Abuse
Depression
Problems with confidence or self-esteem
Emotional regulation
